With schools and universities reopening in just a few days, anxieties are high in regards to student’s safety. While school safety was already a huge topic in our country, matters are even more pressing with the coronavirus outbreak now plaguing our country. While the CDC recommends parents and college students taking the student’s temperatures prior to arriving to school, we cannot guarantee that all parents will take it upon themselves for the school’s public safety.
Even with schools taking on the responsibility of manually taking students temperatures, this is simply not feasible. One school estimated that it takes about 20 seconds to take each students temperature, so even with multiple teachers taking temperatures, it would take 2 hours to take the whole school’s temperature. Even worse, this then leads to kids congregating outside the school building before temperatures have even been taken leading to possible infection spreading.
Fever Detection Cameras are the number one way we can prevent students with fevers entering the building. In less than a second, the camera will scan the students body temperature and send a screenshot of the identified student with the high fever to the front desk so they may be pulled aside and evaluated for a second time. With fever being the most common symptom of the coronavirus, it is imperative that schools install this feature in their buildings.
Even before the coronavirus, there were still many threats looming over school and university safety. When schools across the country shut down during the pandemic, this left April of 2020 being the first month since 2002 that the US went without having a school shooting. Even with kids being healthy in school, the focus still needs to be on helping prevent school shootings. Thankfully, several pieces of equipment are now out there to help prevent and alert school officials of intruders.
Video Surveillance systems allow the grounds to be monitored 24/7 to quickly identify suspicious activity. When identified, Situational Awareness Notification allows officials to notify staff in the matter of a second with the push of a button that action need to be taken immediately. This can be done via cell phone or over an intercom to alert in the way that fits best. Access control can keep intruders from entering certain locations through the necessity for a key code or swipe card to enter. Through the use of key codes, keys do not have to be distributed and possibly copied making it a safer option. Codes can be easily deleted when an employee quits or a temporary code is needing to be made.
